A series of police slip-ups mixed with a healthy dose of corruption mean the investigation into Don Mackay's disappearance is doomed from the start.
When New Zealand kindergarten teacher Allison Dine arrives in Australia with boyfriend Wayne Robb, she is looking for a chance to leave small town New Zealand and the pain of her mother’s recent death behind. She soon meets Wayne’s extended network of New Zealanders including his boss, Terry Clark.
Melbourne stand-over men Brian and Les Kane have ventured into unfamiliar heroin territory in providing protection for Bob Trimbole’s Melbourne dealers. But things turn sour when dealer Wayne Robb is robbed of $200,000 hard cash, on the Kane’s turf. The Kane’s suspect it was Vinnie Mikkelsen and Laurie Prendergast, two of Ray Chuck's mates from the Great Bookie Robbery.
Sharing an exercise yard with a freshly de-eared Mark "Chopper" Read may not be everybody's idea of a good time but for Ray Chuck, prison is a safe haven compared to what's waiting for him on the outside.
The hunger for heroin in Australia means Terry Clark and the organization are turning over big bucks. Terry has more money, but also more to lose. When one of the organization members gives too much information to the cops, Terry makes a bruised and battered example of him.
Terry Clark is looking to get out of the Australia and New Zealand sectors of his heroin business, and concentrate on the European market instead. In an audacious move he offers to sell his stake to Bob Trimbole. As part of his business plan, Terry lets Allison in on some key business secrets to ensure his interests are protected.
With Terry relocated to the UK, Allison is determined to get on with the Australian end of the business; crushing heroin, recruiting couriers and fending off increasingly desperate sensations of loneliness and isolation.
Allison Dine's fragile state is further shaken during a quick visit to the UK to discuss business with Terry Clark. There she encounters her replacement, the feisty Kiwi lawyer Karen Soich, and realises her romantic relationship with Terry is well and truly over. Allison is further unnerved by the note of finality in Terry's voice as he says good-bye.
Terry’s plan to get rid of his business partner Marty "Mr Asia" Johnstone backfires when his butchered remains are discovered in the UK.
The Federal Police prepare to arrest crime boss and cancer sufferer Aussie Bob Trimbole, but a mole within the Feds threatens to create havoc with their investigation. Corrupt law clerk Brian Alexander loses his nerve – and writes his own death warrant and Allison Dine testifies at a coroner’s inquest, and blows the lid on the Mr Asia syndicate.
With Kiwi Terry on trial in England and Aussie Bob on the run abroad, the ‘Mr Asia’ drug syndicate has collapsed. Which means the Australian heroin business is up for grabs. And there are plenty of people ready and willing to plug the gaps. It seems like every ambitious drug dealer, crime figure and corrupt cop is jostling for a slice of the lucrative drug market.
Chris "Mr Rent-a-Kill" Flannery is the most dangerous and volatile man in Australia, hands down. His abilities as a hitman are beyond doubt, but his wild ways are starting to make people nervous. In particular, the corrupt NSW detectives are concerned that Chris has become a loose cannon, a destabilising force on the underworld. They call upon crime king George Freeman to keep Chris under control.
