Arrested, hung over, disgraced, Alphonse Gangitano is a sorry sight as he sobers up in the police cells. His guilty conscience is beginning to stir by the time he’s released on bail. Convinced that Jason Moran was also involved in the nightclub assault, Steve Owen (newly promoted to detective) tricks Jason’s driver Carl Williams into revealing that he did indeed ferry Jason to and from the scene. It’s all Steve needs to issue an arrest warrant and to have Jason’s home searched.
Tracey Seymour, former girlfriend of both Jason and Alphonse, pays the ultimate price for courageously testifying against her ex-husband, accused of double murder.
The Melbourne underworld is in upheaval. Someone is flooding the streets with cheap eckies, undercutting all the established dealers. Accusations, counter-accusations and fists are flying! So are bullets. Small time dealer Dino Dibra gets into an argument with an associate called Bruno, a gun is produced and Bruno winds up dead.
The landscape of Melbourne’s underworld is changing. With Jason Moran locked up in prison for the nightclub brawl his brother Mark attempts to assume control of the Carlton Crew. But they are set in their ways and he is frustrated in his attempts to overhaul their business plan. As Mark sees it, the one thing preventing them from expanding is drug lord Tony Mokbel, but trying to convince his stepfather Lewis Moran of the need to “off” (meaning kill) Mokbel proves impossible.
The Moran boys’ dad Lewis engages Carlton Crew hit man Andrew "Benji" Veniamin to avenge Mark.
In the underworld most of the gangsters’ women learn to turn a blind eye - ask no questions and you’ll be told no lies. But when Carl Williams is sentenced to gaol for manufacturing ecstasy he leaves heavily pregnant wife Roberta to carry on the family (drug) business without him.
Every gangster has to earn a crust somehow. You can do it thumping a bloke, you can do it bumping a bloke...
Despite the protests of both the Purana Taskforce and his family, Jason Moran returns to Australia. The pull of kith and kin is greater than the fear of a violent death that may be waiting for him in Melbourne.
With Jason Moran out of the way, Carl Williams rules the streets of Melbourne. He knows now that he can do anything – and get away with it! Next to be rubbed out is drug dealer WILLIE THOMPSON, a man with a temptingly large supply of precursor chemicals. Why buy from him when you can have the goods for the price of a bullet?
Carl Williams is beginning to believe his own hype. He takes to ringing talkback radio king Derryn Hinch to debate him on the subject of Melbourne crime and corrupt police – and there’s no more corrupt cop than Steve Owen, he claims.
Young lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson’s relationship with carlton crew soldier Lew Caine ramps up with Zarah looking to a future with all the trimmings - house, kids and a new car. But domestic matters are not at the forefront of Lew’s mind. Reeling over the death of Benji his close friend, Lew lays the blame fair and square at the carlton crew’s feet.
Despite their recent successes the pressure is mounting on Purana to end the war once and for all. While Carl Williams remains free and the killings continue the Taskforce faces imminent closure.
